Naples

We arrived in Naples after a two hour high speed train ride. Our AirBnB host was so lovely and sent a driver to pick us up at the train station. The apartment is beautiful, and the location is perfect! We somehow ended up with in the middle of the best market area, all old streets and vendors.

We started towards the Underground City and found this cool church that seemed to focus on called the Church of Purgatory built in 1616. Unlike most churches that filled with Jesus, this one was filled with skulls.

We arrived at the underground city just in time for an English tour. It was terrific. 45 metres down. We learned that Naples had been continuously occupied for 2,400 years. They call it the lasagna city because it’s built in layers and you can really see it in the structure. Whereas Rome leaves the ruins, Naples seems to just built on top of what was there before.

Also, they LOVE Sofia Loren here. Her picture is everywhere.

After the tour we ate and walked and generally absorbed the feel of the city and the markets. We both agreed there were immediately like it better here than Rome.

this morning we are headed to Pompei and Mt. Vesuvius!
